Football is a sport played by two teams of eleven players with a round, oval-shaped ball. The objective of the game is to score more points than the opposing team by getting the ball into the opponent’s end zone or kicking the ball through a set of goalposts.

Here are the basic rules of football:

  • The game is divided into four quarters, each lasting 15 minutes.

  • The team with possession of the ball (the offense) tries to move the ball down the field by running or passing it. The other team (the defense) tries to stop them and take control of the ball.

  • The offense can advance the ball by running with it or by throwing it to a teammate. The ball can be thrown forward or backward.
  • The defense can tackle the player with the ball or intercept a pass to try to gain possession of the ball.

  • If the offense fails to advance the ball 10 yards in four downs, possession of the ball is turned over to the other team.

  • Points are scored by getting the ball into the end zone (touchdown), kicking the ball through the goalposts (field goal), or by tackling the ball carrier in the end zone (safety).

  • The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.

  • The field is marked off into yard lines, and there is a set of goalposts at each end.

  • The ball is placed on the field at the start of each play from scrimmage, which is the line of scrimmage.

  • At the start of each play, the offense must have at least seven players on the line of scrimmage.

  • The quarterback is the leader of the offense and is responsible for receiving the snap from the center and either throwing the ball or handing it off to a running back.

  • The running back is responsible for carrying the ball and trying to gain yardage.

  • The wide receivers and tight ends are responsible for running routes and catching passes thrown by the quarterback.

  • The offensive line is responsible for blocking the defense and creating holes for the running back to run through.

  • The defensive line and linebackers are responsible for trying to tackle the ball carrier and disrupt the offense’s plays.

  • The defensive backs (cornerbacks and safeties) are responsible for covering the wide receivers and trying to intercept passes.

  • Special teams (kickers, punters, and returners) are responsible for kicking the ball to the opposing team on kickoffs, punts, and field goals, and for trying to gain yardage on returns.

  • Players are not allowed to use their hands to touch the ball, except for the player designated as the center, who snaps the ball to the quarterback.

  • Players are not allowed to trip, hold, or block another player below the waist.

  • If a player commits a penalty, the opposing team is awarded an automatic first down and an additional 10 yards.

  • The game is officiated by a team of referees who enforce the rules and make decisions on the field.
